Understanding and Managing C. difficile Infection: Pathogenesis, Treatment, and Recurrence Prevention. Program 214

Program Description

Clostridiodes difficile (C. difficile) infection (CDI) is a major cause of healthcare-associated gastrointestinal illness, often arising after antibiotic use disrupts normal gut flora. The pathogenesis involves the production of toxins that damage the intestinal mucosa, leading to inflammation, diarrhea, and potentially life-threatening complications like colitis. Treatment typically includes antibiotics such as vancomycin or fidaxomicin, with consideration for recurrence, which is common in CDI. Pharmacists play a critical role in managing CDI by ensuring appropriate antibiotic selection, advising on proper dosing, monitoring for side effects, and educating patients on infection prevention. They also help implement strategies to prevent recurrence, such as recommending probiotics or fecal microbiota transplantation, and guiding clinicians on antibiotic stewardship to minimize CDI risk.

At the end of this presentation, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians should be able to:

Pharmacist

1.   Review the pathogenesis of Clostridioides difficile infection and recurrence.

2.   Select an appropriate treatment option for patients with a Clostridioides difficile infection.

3.   Discuss options for the prevention of recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection.

Pharmacy technician

1.   Recall the symptoms associated with Clostridioides difficile infection and recurrence.

2.   Recognize treatment options for patients with Clostridioides difficile infection.

3.   Identify available methods for treatment and prevention of recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection.
